Benefits of gargles and mouth gels

Sometimes inflammation can affect your whole mouth and throat, causing more widespread pain, swelling, and redness. When you’re dealing with pain and discomfort that involves more than just your throat, liquid gargles/mouthwash/oral rinse, and mouth gels just might be the solution.

The main benefit of medicated gargles/mouthwash/oral rinses is their ability to deliver their active ingredients to large areas throughout your whole mouth and oral cavity. With different combinations of pain-relieving (analgesic), anti-inflammatory, and anaesthetic agents, they can provide relief from pain and inflammation right where you need it. With added antiseptic ingredients, they can also be used to help protect your oral health. Analgesic and anti-inflammatory mouth gels can also provide targeted relief of local pain and inflammation, as they are applied directly to the affected areas in your mouth.

How to use gargles and mouth gels

Liquid solutions that can help relieve throat and mouth pain can be used as a mouthwash/oral rinse or a gargle. Gargling is particularly effective for targeting your throat, while rinsing is recommended for reaching all areas of your mouth.

Mouthwash/oral rinse (for children and adults)

  1. First, you’ll need to pour the correct amount into a small cup then tip the solution into your mouth.
  2. Swirl the liquid all around the inside of your mouth for at least 30 seconds – front, back, and side-to-side to cover all surfaces.
  3. Always spit the solution out when you have finished rinsing or gargling.

Gargle (adults who wish to gargle)

  1. First, you’ll need to pour the correct amount into a small cup then tip the solution into your mouth.
  2. Carefully tilt your head back and – without swallowing it – say ‘ahhhh’ for at least 30 seconds while keeping the liquid in your throat.
  3. Always spit the solution out when you have finished rinsing or gargling.

Oral mouth gels:

  1. A  small amount should be applied with a clean finger and gently massaged into the sore areas on your gums or other mouth surfaces.
  2. You should wait around 15 minutes after applying the gel before eating or drinking.

When you need effective relief from painful, swollen sore throats or mouth conditions, look for DIFFLAM Solution. It contains the anti-inflammatory agent benzydamine, which targets inflammation at the site of pain while providing pain-relieving (analgesic) and numbing (anaesthetic) effects in your throat and mouth. The pleasant-tasting mint flavour also gives a refreshing sensation in your mouth and throat.

Dosage – Adults: 15 mL as a gargle or an oral rinse, repeated every 1.5 to 3 hours as needed throughout the day. Children 6 years and over: 5 to 15 mL as a gargle (if able to do so) or an oral rinse, repeated every 1.5 to 3 hours as needed throughout the day.

A gargle/oral rinse plus antiseptic

For fast and effective relief from painful inflammation of your whole mouth and throat, with the added benefit of an antiseptic agent, try DIFFLAM-C Solution. While benzydamine targets inflammation to relieve pain, chlorhexidine delivers long-lasting antiseptic effects against a broad range of germs to help keep your whole mouth and throat clean and healthy.

A gel for painful, inflamed conditions of the mouth – like ulcers, or sore gums

For painful, inflamed conditions of the mouth, mouth and denture ulcers, and sore gums, reach for DIFFLAM Mouth Gel. When applied directly to the mouth or gums, the combined anti-inflammatory action of benzydamine and anti-bacterial action of cetylpyridinium chloride provides fast relief from pain and helps to kill the germs that cause minor mouth and gum infections.
